Tomb of the Lovers

The name “Tomb of the Lovers” immediately sparks the imagination.
Tomb of the Lovers

Archaeology can reveal some details about these two people, although it cannot prove what kind of emotional relationship existed between them. The remains belong to a man of about forty and a woman of about twenty-five. What is unusual is that both skeletons retained their bones in anatomical connection. In other double burials at Castellón Alto, one of the bodies is often found displaced: when the tomb was reopened, the earlier remains were moved aside to make room for another burial.

The arrangement here is different. Observe the burial as evidence of the settlement’s funerary practices. Its popular name suggests a story; studying the remains also teaches us to distinguish what we know from what we can only imagine.
